Failure is the best way to learn!

Today third graders explored and celebrated failures. Students were excited to discover that when we "fail" at something, it is okay because it means we are out there trying new things. Since we have been exploring the scientific method, students completed a project based on the book 11 Failed Experiments by Jenny Offill. Students tested their own creativity by designing their own "failed" experiments.

4th grade "Lights" in the Abyss

4th grade is exploring what lies beneath the cool waves of the ocean. Today we explored physical and behavioral adaptations of various species. One adaptation we experimented with was the use of bioluminescence - a type of chemiluminescence (chemical light) created by creatures. We used Morse code and glowsticks to communicate in light. Below is a picture the students "painted" in light using glowsticks. Ask your student to describe bioluminescence. While they are at it, have them tell you what color they would want to be if they lived in the depths of the ocean. . .

Student s devised plans and hypothesized about ways to get a gummy Life Saver on him. Most teams concluded that teamwork and communication were the most valuable tools for solving this challenge.
